D) Prior restraint
The case originated because of the claim of two of the most famous U.S. newspapers, The New York Times and The Washington Post, of their right to free press to publish the "Pentagon Papers" (a classified material about the United States activities in Vietnam), and because of President Richard Nixon's claim that prior restraint of the material was necessary to protect national security.
