In the case of Boumediene v. Bush, the United States Supreme Court held that detainees in Guantanamo could challenge their detention in United States federal courts, a petition known as habeas corpus.
The cause of Boumediene v. Bush was the submission of a writ of habeas corpus that was done in a civilian court of the United States, on behalf of a naturalized citizen of Bosnia and Herzegovina named Lakhdar Boumediene, which was kept in a military detention by the US in Cuba’s Guantanamo Bay detention camp.
