We can divide the shaded region into three different geometric figure.
First figure is rectangle ABCD with dimension 8 feet and 2 feet.
So, area of rectangle ABCD=Length * width = 8*2 = 16 feet^2
Now the length of rectangle DEFH =DC+CH=8+2=10.
Now the area of rectangle DEFHwith dimension 10 feet and 1 foot 10*1= 10 feet^2.
Now the third figure is triangle EFG with base EF=10 and height GE=8-5=3 feet.
So, area of triangle EFG= 1/2* 10*3 = 5*3 =15 feet^2.
Hence, the area of shaded region = 16+10+15= 41 feet^2.
Now the area of the complete rectangle with dimension 8 feet and 16 feet
= 8* 16
=128 feet^2
So, area of complete rectangle = 128 feet^2.
So, area of non-shaded region= Area of complete rectangle - Area of non-shaded region.
= 128- 41
= 87 square feet
Hence, the area of non-shaded region is 87 square feet.
