The answer would indeed have to be the third option "the ability to use an applied force to make an object move." So if you kick a ball you moving your leg requires energy, and when you hit the ball with your leg applying force into the ball causing it to move is giving the ball energy (kinetic energy) so the ball can move. There are many types of energy but in this case would be potential and kinetic energy. Potential energy is energy that is in a object when it's at rest (or not moving) and kinetic energy is the amount of energy that is in a object when its moving. So you would put energy in the force giving the object the ability to move increasing its kinetic energy.
