Paralanguage and silence are the critical aspects of nonverbal communication.

Paralanguage involves volume, pitch, speech and intonation, can be referred as cover term for body language, expressed consciously or unconsciously. It focuses on “what” and “how” we say it impacting other emotionally. Paralanguage helps in conveying the true meaning behind the words, to emphasize something to be remembered it can be done by modifying the tone and body language.

Silence as a nonverbal communication is highly underutilized. Silence in communication helps others to think, evaluate and capture the attention of others. as quoted by Leonardo da Vinci - "Nothing strengthens authority so much as silence."

Paralanguage and silence are the two depicted aspects of nonverbal communication. They don't need any language to speak as they can be conveyed through signs and gestures.

The role of silence and paralanguage in communication:

  • Silence generally means the absence of any kind of noise in the surroundings but in the terms of nonverbal communication, silence means the absence of speech in the communication between two persons.  This means the person is less engaged in any speech conversation and prefers to communicate with others by gestures and signs.
  • Paralanguage is a type of nonverbal communication that involves volume, pitch, speech, and intonation. It can be also termed as communication by body gestures expressed consciously or unconsciously. It mainly focuses on the question of what to say and how to say it.
