D) The Soviet Union promised to protect Cuba from future attacks
After the failed Bay of Pigs invasion, Castro was afraid of US trying to force him out of government, and so he asked the USSR to support him. They agreed, and also provided missiles to Cuba, which sparked the Cuban Missile Crisis.
