The Human Genome Project , also known as HGP for short was a 15 year project that began in 1990.
It has been described as the largest collaborative biological project in history and was able to sequence and identify 3 billion chemical units in human genes.
From there, the project was able to identify genetic variations that can lead to life-threatening diseases such as cancer and diabetes.
It is described a 'megaproject' which greatly improved the understand of human genetics and it's impact on medicine and diseases.
