There are four cycles in the menstrual cycle that are:
1. menses
This phase takes place during days 1-5 of menstruation and is known as the menstrual flow. Hormones from the ovaries and anterior pituitary gland are found in relatively low amounts.
2. estrogenic
This phase takes place during days 6-13 of menstruation, there are increasing amounts of follicle-stimulating hormone, and the egg containing the ovarian follicle matures.
3. ovulation
This phase is during day 14 of menstruation. The follicle releases the egg.
4. progestational
Occurs during 15-27 of menstruation when the endometrium prepares to receive the fertilized ovum; menses begins if the egg is NOT fertilized.
