Autoimmunity is the immune response of an organism against its own healthy cells and tissues. This is always disadvantageous to a person because it mistakenly attacks our body. Autoimmune diseases which result from this now affect 24 million people. Examples of autoimmune diseases are rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, thyroid disease, inflammatory bowel disease and lupus.
