Personal flotation devices are life saving devices used in play and work situations. Most of us are familiar with use of PFDs in boating, water sport activities and the cruise ships. The PFDs work on the principle of buoyancy, and help an individual's head above water in case he/she physically can not. There are different types; that is type I, II, III, IV and V.

A type I offshore life jacket is generally recommended while boating or playing in rough water areas.

Further Explanation:

A life jacket, life belt, life preserver, life vest, or flotation suit are called personal flotation devices or PFD's which are used by a wearer to continue floating in the water.

PFD's are designed based on level of protection they provide and convenience in wearing them. They are available in different sizes so as to fit in different sized people.

The different types of PFD's are:

Type I

They are called offshore life jackets. The type I devices are made in order to be used in remote or rough waters. In these waters, the disturbance is so much that it takes awhile for the rescue team to reach the spot in case of an emergency. For this reason, the jackets provide excellent flotation, most buoyancy, and keeps the face upside in the water of an unconscious person.

Type II

When immediate assistance can be provided while working in waters type II PFD is used. They are called nearshore vests and are generally used in calm waters.

Type III

These flotation aids are full-sleeved jackets that are used in calm waters where the rescue team can be reached quickly. Such aids are not recommended to be used in rough waters as they are as equipped as type I PFD's and might not always turn the face upside of the wearer.

Type IV

Type IV PFD's are not wearable devices. They are generally thrown in the water at times of trouble or emergency. They are designed as rings buoys or cushions and are held through hands by a person.

Type V

The special use devices or type V PFD's are deck suits or hybrid PFD's which are designed for activities like kayaking, water-skiing, or windsurfing. They must be worn and usually inflate once used in the water.
