A car is traveling at a rate of 50 miles per hour while a motorcycle is traveling at 70 miles per hour. The car takes 4 hours longer to arrive at the destination. The equation representing the scenario is 50(x + 4) = 70x. Describe what the values for x and 70x = 50(x + 4) represent.

Respuesta :

I used t but I guess you could use any variable you want to represent time.  The equation is the rate of the car times the time it took to reach the destination set equal to the rate of the bike times the time it took to reach the same destination.  Because the destination is the same, d is the same for both.  The transitive property tells us that if the distances are the same, then the rates and times are the same as well, so we can set them equal to each other.  That's what all that means. Don't you just love these motion problems?!  lol

Answer:

The value for x represents the number of hours the motorcycle traveled. 70x and 50(x + 4) represent the distance travelled by the motorcycle and car, respectively. They travel an equal distance.
