"Yankee Doodle went to town, riding on a pony, stuck a feather in his hat, and called it 'macaroni'. " Write a plausible explanation for why Yankee Doodle would be naming his feather "Macaroni".

I think the phrase is trying to give a rhyme as pony rhymes with macaroni
There are two possible reasons, one probably to rhyme, like, does this really look like it was meant to make sense? Look at his name. The other is probably to show that the colonists thought they had more class by sticking a feather in their hat and calling it something.
