Solve each quadratic (square roots, factoring or completing the square).

x^2 + 2x - 15 = 0

0 = 3 + 4x + x^2

1. x = -5 or x = 3

You would add 16 to both sides. Then factor the left side and take a square root to solve. 

2. x = -3 and x = -1

Use the same operations here only add 1 to both sides.
