The Zong massacre was the murder of approximately 142 African slaves by the crew of the slave ship Zong in the days following November 29, 1781. The Zong was owned by a Liverpool slave trade union that had taken out insurance of the lives of the slaves. When the ship began to run out of water due to navigation problems, the crew threw some of the slaves into the sea. Subsequently, the owners of the Zong claimed to their insurers economic compensation for the loss of the slaves. After the insurance refused to pay, in the subsequent trial it was ruled that in some circumstances the elimination of slaves was legal, and that the insurance could be claimed to be financially responsible for said deaths.
