Research indicates that touch causes a decrease in cortisol output. Cortisol is a steroid hormone in the glucocorticoid class of hormones Touch itself appears to stimulate our bodies to react in very specific ways. The right touch can lower blood pressure, heart rate and cortisol levels  drops. If cortisol levels are elevated, they will begin to decrease by the sense of touch triggering the relaxation response.
