In 1948, the United Kingdom was forced to grant independence to Burma. In 1949 there was a Communist uprising dominated by the government of U Nu. Since 1962 a military regime led by General Ne Win, which overthrew U Nu, was imposed. After that, a new Constitution was approved, which defined the country as a socialist republic in January 1974, two months later Ne Win was elected president and re-elected in March 1978. He resigned in June 1981 and was succeeded by General San Yun although he continued to lead of the Party of the Socialist Program of Burma. In August of 1988 a revolt known as the 8888 Uprising broke out, that demanded the political opening of the country, nevertheless it finished with the formation of a military government with general Saw Maung at the head of it.
