The Europeans did not treat the Africans fairly because they were in something called a slave trade. The Portuguese were the first to explore Africa when looking for a way to India from the continent. The Portuguese set up trading there; the most important trade of the European nations quickly became slaves. The African people are divided into many ethnic groups who were considered to be foreigners. During that time, the European nations began to explore and conquer areas of Africa. They had the greed of ivory, gold, rubber, wood, and other resources found there. The different nations soon found themselves fighting over African territory. To avoid war in Europe over the land in Africa, most nations met at the Berlin Conference in 1884 and divided Africa up among themselves. The main goal of the Europeans was to make money in their colonies. They thought the African people were better off under European rule. Many Christian missionaries set up schools and hospitals for the Africans, and most of the countries of Africa became independent in the 1960s.
Slavery existed in Africa and in the world as well, before the transatlantic slave trade. Historians have estimated 12 million Africans were forced to be transported from their homes across the Atlantic. Millions died when they were being captured and transported. Enslaved Africans were treated as possessions with no rights and children who were born into slavery. As soon as Europeans began to settle in America, they imported Africans slaves to work for them. As European settlement grew, so did the demand for enslaved people. A campaign in Great Britain to abolish slavery supported by black and white abolitionists. The battle was long and dangerous, with pro-slavery campaigners arguing that the slave trade was important for the British economy. Some also were claiming that enslaved Africans were happy and well-treated. Unfortunately, the many rebellions by enslaved Africans and evidence led to demands to abolish the slave trade. There is clear evidence of African cultures thousands of years ago shown by the Egyptians. In spite of the evidence, Europeans justified enslaving African people by describing them to be savages, uncivilized, and even subhuman. European greed led to the exploitation of Africa's natural resources. Its people were enslaved and were tortured by being hit with whips and branding irons and much more. The transatlantic trade was economically efficient for Europeans who made lots of money, but it was brutal and torturous to millions of African people.
Europeans were brutal and unfair to Africans, as they were slaves. Eventually, it ended in the 1800s and the Africans were treated semi-better for a little while. Then European greed led to the exploitation of Africa’s natural resources and the slaves were being tortured, hit, and called horrible names for human beings.
