Patricia Kuhl in her 2000 study of language acquisition in babies found that infants exploit the statistics of language they hear in voices of their caretakers or others around them. By detecting the statistical pattern of language, babies start to learn about syllables and when one unit of language (a word) ends and a new one begins.
