Checkout Charlie was convinced he was being cheated by the automated checkout scanner at the grocery store, so he memorized the prices of every item in the supermarket, then watched the screen as the clerk scanned the items of everyone in front of him: The man in the green shirt had a jar of applesauce and & pound of beef, which scanned correctly for a total of $5.40. The woman with the red scarf had a bag of candy and a doughnut; which scanned correctly for a total of $2.90. The man in blue shorts had a pound f beef and a carton of eggnog, which scanned correctly for a total of $7.10. The woman in the pink miniskirt had a doughnut and a jar of applesauce, which scanned correctly for a total of $3.10. The man with the purple cap had a carton of eggnog and a bag of candy; which scanned correctly for a total of $5.70. When it was Checkout Charlie's turn, he was distracted by the lovely young checkout clerk; who was wearing a multicolored top: She told him his total was $4.80, and Charlie paid without ever taking his eyes off her; so he didn't check that his 2 items had scanned correctly: Because he bought 2 items that had already been scanned, the total was correct: Which two items did love-struck Charlie buy; and how much did each of the scanned items cost?
