You are a Civil Engineer. You are in charge of planning a development along a flood-prone coastline that is under threat from climate change and sea level rise. Many in the community oppose the project because of the environmental threats it poses. Many in the community support the project because the development is worth billions of dollars in real estate sales, hotels and tourism, and tax revenue. Your proposal should include: • Choose a coastal environment (beach, cliffside, marshland, etc.) Describe the coastal environment location. • Research current and possible future engineering solutions to prevent damage to your chosen environment due to sea level rise. Include impacts to human-built structures (homes, businesses, schools, etc.) • Include two or more engineering solutions that will be used to mitigate the rising ocean. Consider how these will apply to your specific environment and how they could impact the surrounding community. • Sketch the development showing the placement of the structures or solutions and where they are in relation to the ocean and the businesses/housing of the community. • Include citations from sources.
