The economic makeup of the United States has had a marked influence on its population centers. During early and middle 1900s, the factories and warehouse the manufacturing industry were located in large urban centers. Cities that were home to these industries grew at a steady rate during this time period. When the U.S economy shifted from manufacturing to more service-oriented industries in the second half of the century, cities that had previously housed manufacturing industries experienced a drop in population. In addition, in the first half of the 20th century most people relied on public transportation or walked to work, but in the latter half of the century the automobile became much more prevalent in society. This new freedom allowed many people to move from cities to suburbs.
