During our study of the first sixteen chapters of Elisa Carbone's Blood on the River, we've gotten
to know Samuel pretty well,
having experienced the settlers' journey to the unknown from his
perspective. We have also begun to examine both the social and environmental
factors that challenged
them as they
struggled to make a life in Jamestown, and we have examined the ways in which Carbone
uses language to develop Samuel's character and our understanding of what he experienced. This
task provides an opportunity for you to pull
together your understanding of these issues before we
continue our study of the text. This first Focusing Question
Task also begins your preparation for the
End
-of-
Module Task, in which you will explore more fully the social and environmental factors that
contributed to Jamestown's development and
decline.
