Students of Clark High School, it is time for us to take a stand for something that is important to a small portion of this school’s population. By now, most of you have heard of the administration’s decision to cancel the drama department’s production of The Gifted Brothers by the Brothers Grimm. This decision was made just one day before rehearsals were scheduled to begin. It is understandable that many students are outraged and devastated. Students worked hard to prepare for auditions. Those that earned parts had memorized their lines and were excited about getting to work on the production. In addition, the backstage crew was also ready to get started with rehearsals. The students are not the only ones who are upset. The drama teachers are also extremely irritated that the administration has made this decision. With this untimely cancellation, all their hard work has been washed down the drain. I realize that most of you are not involved in the production or the drama department, but that is not the issue here. The problem happens to be the administration’s reasons for canceling the production. First, the administration decided to cancel the play because they claimed that the ideas in it are too far fetched. I completely agree that the ideas are unrealistic; however, that is the entire idea behind the production, since the Brothers Grimm wrote tales about mythical or magical beings. In addition, some plays, movies, books, and stories are supposed to transport a person to a different time and place. In order to do that, there will most definitely be some sort of imaginary ideas or characters. If the administration held tight to their ridiculous claim that students shouldn’t be exposed to far-fetched ideas or events, then they would have to ban more than half the selections in the English textbooks. Besides, a theater production is meant to be enjoyable, and something that is completely realistic would only bore the audience.
