Care and combraunce is comen to us alle.
If this Kynge come in mankynde wil he fecche
And lede it ther [Lazar is]. and lyghtlych me bynde.
Patriarkes and prophetes han parled herof longe,
That such a lorde and a lyghte shulde lede hem alle hennes.'
'Lysteneth,' quod Lucifer, 'for I this lorde knowe;
Bothe this lorde and this lighte, is longe ago I knewe hym.'
May no deth [this lorde] dere, ne no develes queyntise,
And where he wil is his waye--ac war hym of the periles.
If he reve me my righte he robbeth me by maistrye.
For by right and bi rsoun tho renkes that ben here
Bodye and soule ben myne, bothe gode and ille.
For hymself seyde that Sire is of Hevene,
Yif Adam ete the apple, alle shulde deye
And dwelle with us develes: this thretynge [Drighten] made.
And [sitthen] he that Sothenesse is seyde this wordes,
And sitthen I [was] seised sevene [thousande] wyntre,
I leve that lawe nil naughte lete hym the leest.""
