Consider just the immediate political consequences of World War I:
Germany lost all of its colonies and a lot of territory. The German Empire was no more.
The Austro-Hungarian Empire was no more. It broke apart into Austria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, and Yugoslavia—what Gavrilo Princip had wanted when he assassinated Franz Ferdinand back in 1914!
The Ottoman Empire broke up into Turkey and several small states in the Middle East, though several peoples who had been promised independence in return for helping the Allies were told they were not ready to govern themselves and turned into League of Nations mandates.
The Russian Empire along with the Romanov dynasty was overthrown by its own people, and by the war's end the largest country in the world geographically was the first communist state. To get out of the war, the Russians had been forced by the Germans to give up a million square miles of territory that included a third of their population. Lenin, the communist leader of Russia, called the treaty an "abyss of defeat, dismemberment, enslavement and humiliation."
If you're keeping count, that's four empires down and nine new countries.
Imagine if the United States was divided into five different countries. How would life change for us? Think about how trade would work, currency exchange, or travel! The new countries of Europe were poor and often in conflict with one another.
