Identify the types of listening: At the beginning of your day, you turn on the radio. Your favorite
song is playing and you stop and engage in
listening. When the song is finished
you began to get dressed. Although the radio is still playing and you are aware that it is on, you
are focused on other matters thus your listening has shifted to
_. Suddenly the
telephone rings. It is one of your dearest friends and they sound upset because they have a
problem. You stop what you are doing to hear what they are saying becoming a bit upset
yourself. It is at which point you are engaging in
listening. 30 minutes later
you get into your car and pick up your cousin who rides with you to the college. You love your
cousin but he has a tendency to go on and on about his problems with his girl friend and you
get tired of hearing it. You pretend to pay attention providing him with enough cues to make him
think you are really tuned in but actually your thoughts are far away. You are engaging in
type of listening. You then arrive, park and head to speech class. As the
teacher speaks you hang on her every word (smile!) because you want to retain and
understand what she is saying for the upcoming quiz. At this point you are engaging in
listening. Lastly your instructor makes a statement and asks you to
determine if it is true. At this point you are engaging in
listening..
