Nanni di Banco, Four Crowned Saints c. 1409 - 1416/17
a) Built for the guild of wood and stone carvers, of which Nanni was a member.
b) Depicts four Christian sculpture who refused to carve a statue of a pagan god for the Roman Emperor Diocletian and were martyred.
c) Saints wear Roman togas; heads are influenced by portraits of Roman emperors.
d) Saints seem to be discussing their fate; feet placed outside of the arch, stepping into our space.
e) Pedestal carved in an arc following the positioning of the Saints.
f) Figures are independent of the niche in which they stand.
g) Bottom scene contains a view of sculptors at work on their craft.
