In this activity you will use images from the FSA archives to describe a specific location or topic during the Great Depression.

Directions
1. Spend a few minutes browsing the FSA archives. Then choose a topic you would like to focus on for your photo set. Some suggestions are listed below, but you may come up with others.
Dust Bowl
Segregation
Factory work
Migrants
Families
Shelter
Women
2. Conduct a more narrow search of the photographs to come up with your photo set — it may be useful to include the abbreviation “FSA” in your search terms. Your photo set should include five images related to the topic you’ve chosen. Choose images that stand out to you.
3. Answer the questions below about your photo set.

3. What do you think your photo set would teach someone who didn’t know much about the Great Depression? (10 points)

4. Dorothea Lange took 5 other pictures of Florence Owens Thompson, but only one became iconic. What sort of photos did you NOT include in your set? Why? (18 points)

5. Florence Owens Thompson later said of Lange, "I wish she hadn’t taken my picture. I can’t get a penny out of it….That photo may well have saved some peoples’ lives, but I can tell you for certain, it didn’t save ours." From the photographs you’ve seen, how would you describe the relationship between the FSA photographers and the subjects they documented? (20 points)
