Part A
Naissan has just started a summer job as a camp counselor. During the first week of camp, she notices that the
campers she is in charge of seem to get very little sleep. She notes that many of them are up late because they
seem to have trouble falling asleep. During the second week of camp, she monitors the campers' sleep and also
asks the campers how much caffeine they drink. The results are shown below.
Describe the relationship between the variables as illustrated in the graph.
Explain how REM rebound might relate to the campers in Part A.
PART B:
Naissan believes it might be helpful to manipulate the amount of caffeine the campers are consuming in order to
modify their sleep. For the third week of camp, she gives half the campers caffeinated drinks and withholds caffeine
from the other half.
Identify the independent variable in Part B.
Describe what additional information is needed in Part B to determine whether the study is an experiment.
Explain how the researcher would implement a double-blind procedure for Part B.
PART C:
Explain how an electroencephalogram (EEG) might be used in a future study on caffeine and sleep.
Explain how Naissan could use incentive theory to increase the campers' consumption of caffeine-free.
drinks.
