George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion is a twentieth
century adaptation of a very old tale. In Greek mythology,
Pygmalion was a sculptor who fell in love with his own
creation, a woman made of ivory. The goddess Venus
granted his wish that his creation come to life.
in Show's version of the story, Professor Henry Higgins
assumes the role of Pygmalion, only his "creation" is a
young woman whom he and his friend bet they can
transform into a proper lady, aided only by instruction in
language and manners. The play satirized many social
problems of the day, including inequalities between
socioeconomic classes and men and women
in the following scene from Act Ill of the play, Higgins's
mother reminds the two men that Eliza is a human being
with feelings, which they seem not to have considered.
