the chancel, a short trapezoid, was wider than the crossing and was spanned by a barrel vault (w. 16 m). the apse was semicircular on the inside, but square on the exterior. there were staircase towers in the angles of the chancel. the west wall of the nave was 6 m thick; it had a central portal with moulded, stepped jambs inside and out, and flanking newel stairs indicate that twin rectangular towers were planned
