Guy de Maupassant’s "The Necklace."
Directions: Please respond to the following questions. Unless otherwise stated, your responses to each question should be 3-7 sentences in length where applicable.
1. Why had M. Loisel been saving 400 Francs?
2. Do you think there is a moral to this story? Write 3-5 sentences describing what you believe is the moral of this story.
3. Discuss whether the Loisels chose the right course of action when they found the necklace was missing. What other choices were open to them and why were these not chosen?
4. There are a few ironies within this story. Your job is to find at least one of them. What about this event is ironic? Be specific, use examples from the text in your response. Learn about irony here.
5. Choose one character and develop a character sketch about them. An easy way to describe a character is to pretend you are telling someone about the character who has not read the story. You will want to include specific details about their appearance, their behavior and events that may have occurred to them in the story. Your answer should be 5-7 sentences in length.
6. Compare and contrast the life of Madame Loisel before and after the disappearance of the necklace. Do you think she had reason to be dissatisfied with her life? Why or why not?
7. Think of a situation where you or a friend made a choice that turned out differently than you expected. (You don't have to get personal - you can describe a fun or silly situation.) Identify the irony in the situation. Is the irony verbal, dramatic, or cosmic?
