about: lab: heredity and punnett squares Section 1: Overview of Lab 10 Use your answers from questions 1 and 2 as the basis for the first section of your lab report. This section provides your reader with background information about why you conducted this lab and how it was completed. It should be one to two paragraphs in length. BI- Section II: Observations and Conclusions Overall Use your answers from questions 3 and 4 as the basis for the second section of your lab report. This section provides your reader with charts, tables, or drawings from the lab. You also need to include answers to the follow- up questions and ways in which you would improve the lab. When complete, the lab report should be read as a coherent whole. Make sure you connect different pieces with relevant transitions. Review for proper grammar, spelling, punctuation, formatting, and other conventions of organization and good writing Pre-Lab Information Purpose Time Question Summary Use a virtual lab to explore the use of Punnett squares to predict genotypes and phenotypes of offspring. Approximately 45 minutes How are Punnett squares used to predict phenotypes? Some characteristics are passed to offspring directly through the inheritance of traits. Regions on a chromosome that code for a trait are called genes. Genes can take different forms, known as alleles. In organisms that reproduce sexually, one form of a trait, or one allele, is inherited from one parent, and the other allele is inherited from the other parent. The physical expression of this combination of alleles is known as the phenotype. h In this virtual lab, you will be completing orders for certain types of horses. You will need to understand which allele is dominant and which allele is recessive, and select correct combinations of parents to produce the desired offspring. Scenario Jessie is a young scientist and entrepreneur. She owns a company called Horsin' Around that accepts and places orders for horses. She receives several orders for a variety of horses and must use what she knows about alleles, Punnett squares, genotypes, and phenotypes to correctly fill the orders. Lab Procedure Step 1: Watch the scenario. a) Press Play to begin. You will watch a scenario of Jessie and Colton, her assistant, receiving orders.
