suppose you have the michelson interferometer discussed in problem 3, and that you move the mirror on the translation stage until the output intensity is 20.400 mw/cm . suppose that your power meter is sensitive enough to detect a change in intensity of 20.004 mw/cm . by what additional distance would the mirror have to move in order to result in a detectable change in intensity (i.e. a change in the intensity to 20.396 mw/cm ) ? this problem shows that such interferometers can be used to measure very small changes in the position of one of the mirror.
