The Fight for Latin American Independence
During the 1700s and 1800s, there was growing discontent among some segments of Latin American society. Creoles—European?descended Latin Americans—bitterly resented peninsulares—those born in Spain. Growing numbers of mestizos, people of Native American and European descent, and mulattoes, people of African and European descent, were angry at being denied the status, wealth, and power available to whites. Native Americans and enslaved Africans also suffered at the hands of the white peninsulares and creoles. The colonial system, along with the desire for social and political reform, made the region ripe for rebellion.
