Engineer y works for an insurance company, and part of her work involves visits to manufacturing sites to assess compliance with best practices as outlined by the company as well as compliance with codes, standards, and state and federal regulations. During a recent site visit, management at the site brought their safety compliance specialists to assist with the visit and to respond quickly to engineer y’s findings. As engineer y prepares to begin inspection of the manufacturing site, she realizes she forgot to bring the necessary ppe—she does not have her hard hat. The manufacturing site staff offer her a new hard hat; they routinely make hard hats available to visitors who may not have the necessary ppe. Engineer y’s company has a policy that forbids accepting gifts valued at more than $100, and because she has recently purchased a new hard hat, engineer y knows the hard had offered is valued at more than $50. If she returns to her hotel to get her own hard hat, she will be unable to complete the inspection, and the visit would have to be rescheduled for another day. Engineer y completes the site inspection and returns the hard had before leaving the site.
