Write a Descriptive Poem
Over the next few lessons, you will be reading various descriptive poems. Starting today, you will create a poem of your own—one that describes a place that is important to you. Be sure to include words and details that appeal to a reader's five senses. Here are some requirements for your descriptive poem:
Your poem should describe a favorite place, either real or imagined.
Your poem should be no less than two stanzas (paragraphs) long. Each stanza should have four lines.
Your poem should contain all five senses in some way: sight, touch, taste, hearing, smell.
Use vivid, precise, concrete words and phrases to make the subject of your poem come alive.
The final draft will be scored by your teacher using the Descriptive Poem Grading Rubric. Look at the rubric yourself so that you know how your writing will be scored.
