In todays world social media has basically taken over every persons life from socializing outside with friends starting arguments of how this this and that and changing opinions to popular people saying this and this is how it goes nothing else you opinion doesn't count and the way i say it is correct and this actually affected how people think. Back in Emerson's day or more said when transcendentalists and romanticist movement was sweeping all across the globe the movement changed how people thought how people wrote, lived, reconnected with nature and god and over time this disappeared with the innovation and technology and industry as people became dependent on the new tech and this went against everything Emerson and Thoreau believed in.
With the development of technology opinions no longer change and social media is to blame for this because people look at one news article and believe every word in there without looking a multiple sources and constructing an idea of what is going on only making people think one idea isolating and punishing those who think differently or act differently from what society wants.
