The Superstudio architects worked together in Florence, Italy, from the mid-1960s until 1978. They participated in
a design movement that questioned popular modernist stances. For example, these architects were skeptical
about the Importance of technology and the universality of so-called Idealistic design. They believed these
notions, if applied together, could eliminate architectural diversity and promote cookle-cutter sameness. One of
the group's best-known projects was The Continuous Monument, a group of photomontages of giant buildings
that splayed across the earth's surface. The structures were blocky and featureless and wrapped in a grid of
black-outlined squares. The group Intended the design as a critique of urban planning concepts that were popular
at the time.
