Dear Editor:
[1] The residents of our town should vote "no" on the proposal to build a gas station on the corner of Smithville and Birch Roads. [2] First,
traffic at this intersection is already heavy. [3] The state government is considering the need to widen Smithville Road to improve traffic flow.
[4] Second, there is a stream near the site where the gas station would be built. [5] Gas stations pose pollution threats, and government experts
recommend that they not be built near rivers, lakes, or streams. [6] Third, there is no need for a gas station at this intersection. [7] There are already
two gas stations within a mile of this location. [8] Finally, gas stations are ugly. [9] There are many attractive old buildings on Birch Road, and a gas
station would ruin the neighborhood.
