In recent years, there have been frequent fatal incidents of police violence against African Americans. More than 1,100 people died as a result of police violence in the United States in 2021, according to the website Map of Police Violence. Most of the deaths occurred during nonviolent crimes, or in the absence of a crime. Police violence against minorities is not uncommon in the United States. 1990 Philip Pannell, a 16-year-old black boy, was shot and killed by a white police officer.
