Capoeira is a form of martial arts that originated in
Brazil among enslaved people. Capoeira is practiced
with musical accompaniment. To a casual observer, it
appears that capoeiristas are dancing rather than
practicing a form of martial arts. Musical instruments
such as the berimbau, drums, and tambourine are
played by an ensemble. A call-and-response chorus
made up of the players is led by one of the musicians.
The music and dancelike moves wed enslaved
people to disguise their self-defense training from
enslavers.
